TAMPA, Sept. 21, 2019 – The No. 10/22 South Florida women's soccer team fought hard but ultimately dropped its final nonconference game of the season to Texas Tech (RV), 2-1. The Bulls led in most categories on the score sheet, but it wasn't enough to counter two early goals from the Red Raiders.
USF (5-2) took 16 shots and 10 found their way on target, maintaining its offensive attack that ranks ninth in the nation in shots on goal per game (9.17).
Texas Tech took the lead in the 10th minute, with Kirsten Davis picking off a defensive pass from the Bulls and finding the back of the net to take a 1-0 lead. The Red Raiders struck again in the 28th minute as Charlotte Teeter slipped through the Bulls defense to score.
Junior defender
Sabrina Wagner (New Port Richey, Fla.) fired back and put the Bulls on the board in the 39th minute with a shot from distance. The goal was assisted by sophomore
Emma Davies (Ontario, Canada), who slipped a pass across Texas Tech's midfield, finding Wagner for the goal.
South Florida took the momentum into the locker room and consistently challenged Texas Tech in the second half. However, the Red Raider's freshman goalkeeper Madison White stopped every shot sent her way, keeping the Bulls off the board to give Texas Tech the 2-1 victory.
Evelyne Viens (Quebec, Canada) and
Sydny Nasello (Land O Lakes, Fla.) led the stat sheet offensively, tallying eight of USF's 16 shots. Freshman midfielder
Rosalia Muino Gonzalez (Coruna, Spain) also made statements during the game, including a shot that struck the crossbar on an attempt to tie the game in the first half.
Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on the message at halftime…
"We just had to dig into them. They knew the game plan. They knew what they were capable of. They're an incredible team. They play incredible soccer and they didn't do that in the first half. They had to push the reset button. But they did. They came out in the second half. They played incredible soccer. We had a majority of the ball. We had plenty of chances. You can't give up two goals the way we play. You have to be ready to play from the whistle."
