No. 14 USF Remains Unbeaten in Conference Play with Win over Houston

TAMPA, Fla., March 28, 2021 – The No. 14 University of South Florida women's soccer team won on the road in Houston, 3-1, to remain perfect in conference play on Sunday afternoon.

Serita Thurton (Ajax, Ontario, Canada) netted the game-winner for the Bulls (6-0-1, 5-0-0 AAC), her first career goal. Sydny Nasello (Land O' Lakes, Fla.) and Vivianne Bessette (Montreal, Quebec, Canada) also scored in the win. Sydney Martinez (Rincon, Ga.) made three saves in the game and earned the win in net, continuing her streak of success.

Houston applied pressure early with Jazmin Grant scoring less than five minutes into the game to take a quick lead. USF responded 10 minutes later as Bessette found the back of the net for her second goal of the year.

The Bulls scored again to take the lead before halftime. A pass from Nasello found its way to Thurton, who put it past the Cougar goalkeeper to give USF a 2-1 lead heading into the break. South Florida kept up the pressure on the other side of the half. Nasello received a pass from Bessette and sent it over the goal line to add to the Bulls' lead and earn the 3-1 victory.

Quotable
Head coach Denise Schilte-Brown on today's game…
"We played well today. Overall, it was a great team effort with every player coming in to contribute minutes. I really liked the maturity the team showed in rebounding after the early goal to take the lead before halftime. They didn't let it get to their head and fought back into the game to get the win."

Notables
  • This was the first time this season the Bulls trailed at any point in a game. Including today's game, the Bulls have trailed for only nine minutes and 25 seconds of game time.
  • Paula Leblic (Madrid, Spain) led the Bulls with three shots on goal.
