Bulls Power Past No. 23 Wichita State to Win Series

TAMPA, Fla. April 25, 2021 – The University of South Florida softball team won its fourth conference series of the year with an 8-1 victory in the weekend's series finale against Wichita State.

Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) continued a dominant weekend, tossing her third complete-game victory of the series while also hitting a three-run home run in the fifth inning. AnaMarie Bruni (Schwenksville, Pa.) went three-for-four at the plate, while also scoring two runs and stealing a base.

Wichita State struck first, scoring on a sacrifice fly on the second play of the game. Corrick shut the Shockers down afterwards, only allowing two more hits in the rest of the contest. USF tied the game at 1-1 soon after, as Kyndall Williams (Trenton, Fla.) doubled home Bruni.

The Bulls' offense exploded for seven runs in the fifth inning. Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel, Fla.), Alexis Johns (Sarasota, Fla.) and Bruni all reached to load the bases with no one out. After a fielder's choice which kept the bases loaded but retired Kadlub, Josie Foreman (St. Petersburg, Fla.) singled through the left side to score Johns. Keen drove home a run by being hit by a pitch in the next at-bat, and Megan Pierro (Lutz, Fla.) made the score 4-1 with a sacrifice fly.

Corrick, dominating on both sides of the ball, blasted a three-run home run over the center field fence to extend USF's lead to six runs. Later in the inning, Vivian Ponn (Fort Myers, Fla.) singled home Alanah Rivera to cap the Bulls' seven-run, six-hit rally.

Corrick remained in the circle to earn her 18th win and 18th complete game of the season.

Quotable
Head coach Ken Eriksen on today's game…
"To go into Wichita and win three of four on the road is a big deal. Wichita State is a pretty good team. We had big-time pitching by Corrick and timely hitting by the entire line-up. We had a few freshman really step up this weekend which tells me not only does the immediate season look good, but so does the future."

Notables
  • Head coach Ken Eriksen now sits at 999 career wins. He could become the Xth Division I head coach to hit the millennium mark next weekend at home against East Carolina.
  • Corrick now has 244 strikeouts on the season, which ranks seventh on USF's single season list.
  • Bruni needs just two stolen bases to set a new USF single-season record. She currently has 32 on the year, one shy of the 33 mark Shelly Riker set in 2002.
