USF Drops Final Game Against ECU in Extra Innings

TAMPA, FLA. May. 2, 2021 – The University of South Florida softball team dropped the series finale, 1-0, in eight innings to the East Carolina Pirates on Sunday. The Bulls move into next weekend needing to win three of four against UCF to clinch the regular season conference title.

Georgina Corrick (Sanford, Fla.) dominated once again in the circle, despite earning the loss in the contest. She tossed her 21st complete game of the season, allowing only two hits and one unearned run while striking out eight.

After a hitless first inning, Corrick surrendered her first hit in 22.2 innings in the circle as a Pirate reached on a single to left field. Pitching ultimately continued to prevail throughout the end of the regulation game, with neither team able to score a run at the end of seven innings.

The Pirates scored the game-winner in the top of the eight. A lead-off double put a runner in scoring position. Corrick retired the next two batters, then intentionally walked a batter to place runners on first and second with two outs. An error on an infield pop-up allowed the lead runner to score and clinch the game for East Carolina, as USF couldn't find the equalizer in the bottom of the inning.

Notables

  • Corrick has not surrendered an earned run in 31.1 innings in the circle. The last earned run she allowed was in the first inning against Wichita State on April 25.
