Bulls, Green topple 54-hole scoring records; USF places second in season-opening tournament
MOBILE, Ala. (September 6, 2021) – The University of South Florida women's golf team shattered multiple programs records over the weekend en route to a second-place finish among a 17-team field at the USA Intercollegiate to begin the 2021-22 campaign.

In Saturday's opening round of the season and tournament, the Bulls collectively carded an 18-hole score of 280 to set a new team record. In that same round, Melanie Green (Medina, N.Y.) shot a career-best 65 (-7), which also stands as a new low mark for a single round in program history vs. par.

On Monday, the Bulls once again caught fire in the final round of the tournament. USF tallied a team score of 282 in the finale for a cumulative score of 852 – a new 54-hole record. The Bulls' score of 852 smashed the previous mark of 861 which was also set under head coach Erika Brennan in the first event of the 2020-21 season.

"This is a special team and it was great to see them play exceptionally well," Brennan said after the conclusion of Monday's round. "To come out of the gate with multiple school records feels really good and the team was rewarded in this tournament for their hard work in preparation for the season. We look forward to keeping this momentum going in our next event later this month."

Green, a First Team All-Conference selection as a true freshman last year, placed third individually at the USA Intercollegiate by setting another program record with a 54-hole score of 205 (-11).

Morgan Baxendale (Windermere), a senior transfer from Vanderbilt, posted a strong final round of 67 to race up the leaderboard with a seventh-place finish of 212 (-4).

Ashley Zagers (Oldsmar) shot even-par on Monday to finish 21st individually at 217 (+1). Ana Maria Barriga (Neiva,, Colombia) carded a career-low of 72 (E) in Saturday's opening round and finish at 221 (+5) in a tie for 32nd overall. Ramya Meenakshisundaram (Jacksonville) rounded out the team scoring with rounds of 79-72-76 (227).

Leonor Medeiros (Palmela, Portugal) showed great progress over the weekend in her collegiate debut with round of 78-74-71 to finish inside the top 50 individually.

The Bulls return to Tampa for the next few weeks to work on their game before heading to Vail, Colorado for the Golfweek Conference Challenge on September 27-29.

About USF Women's Golf
The Bulls are in their fourth season under head coach Erika Brennan in 2021-22. USF is among the fastest rising program in the country, as they climbed 75 spots in the national Golfstat rankings following Brennan's first season. The Bulls won two tournaments in 2018-19 and set several program records, including season scoring average (293.43) and team rounds of par or better (6), and in 2019-20 the Bulls posted a wire-to-wire win at the Old Friends Invitational, marking the program's third tournament title since spring 2019. USF opened its abbreviated 2020-21 campaign by breaking the program team record for low 54-hole team score (861).
