DALLAS, Texas (January 11, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls wrap up a two-game conference road trip at SMU on Wednesday night. The Bulls are looking to snap a three-game skid overall and secure their first AAC victory of the season.
South Florida and SMU have split their last four meetings in tightly contested affairs which have seen an average margin of victory of 6.5 points.
The Bulls rank 36th in the NCAA in scoring defense (62.0 ppg) and are second in the American. USF will look to slow a skilled three-point shooting team in SMU that ranks 59th nationally from downtown (36.6%). The Bulls have held their opponents to a 31% clip from beyond the arc this season.
The Mustangs are also a strong rebounding unit which will play a factor in the outcome Wednesday. USF is 5-3 this season when out-rebounding its opponents. Seven Bulls are averaging at least three rebounds per game led by Russel Tchewa (5.2).
Jamir Chaplin and Jalyn McCreary have been the two hottest Bulls offensively as of late. Chaplin is averaging 15.6 ppg over the last three tilts and scored a career-high 17 points at Tulane on Saturday. McCreary has set new season highs in scoring two games in a row (12, 14) and is shooting 72% (18-25) from the field over his last four games.
Caleb Murphy and Javon Greene are the only two Bulls to have started all 14 games to date while 11 of the 12 players this season are averaging at least 10 minutes per contest. Murphy leads USF in scoring (11.9) and assists (3.4). Greene is averaging 10.4 points per contest and has a team-best 57 defensive rebounds.

About USF Men's Basketball
The USF men's basketball team is led by head coach Brian Gregory, who enters his fifth season in 2021-22. Gregory was introduced as the 10th head coach in program history in March of 2017 after previously leading programs at Georgia Tech (2011-16) and Dayton (2003-11). Gregory spent nearly a decade as an assistant coach under Michigan State's Hall of Fame head coach Tom Izzo and helped the Spartans win the 2000 NCAA National Championship. Gregory owns over 300 career head coaching wins and six postseason appearances, including the 2010 NIT Championship with Dayton. In his second season at the helm of the Bulls, Gregory led the team to the best win turnaround in the NCAA, the most single-season wins in school history and the 2019 College Basketball Invitational championship.Â

USF has retired three numbers in its 51-year history: Chucky Atkins (12), Charlie Bradley (30) and Radenko Dobras (31). The Bulls have earned three NCAA tournament bids, appeared in the NIT eight times and won the 2019 College Basketball Invitational.
