NEW ORLEANS, La. (January 8, 2022) – Sophomore Jamir Chaplin (Norcross, Ga.) continued his recent hot streak by scoring a career-best 17 points on Saturday for the University of South Florida (5-9, 0-2 AAC), but it wasn't enough as the Bulls dropped a 68-54 decision at Tulane University (6-7, 3-1 AAC).
The Bulls and Green Wave entered the contest as the two top teams for committing the fewest turnovers in the American. That stat was a key factor in the outcome as South Florida turned the ball over a season-high 17 times and Tulane capitalized with 24 points off those miscues.
Foul trouble also plagued USF in its first road conference tilt of the season. Tulane went 22-25 from the free throw line while the Bulls went 8-13 from the charity stripe. That 14-point swing was the difference in the final score.
Jalyn McCreary (Marietta, Ga.) tallied a new season high in scoring for the second straight outing with 14 points against Tulane on 7-9 shooting.
Jalen Cook, Kevin Cross and R.J. McGee combined for 51 of the Green Wave's 68 total points.
Notable
- Chaplin has scored in double digits in three straight games.
- McCreary (Marietta, Ga.) is shooting 72 percent (18-25) over his last four games.
- Javon Greene (McDonough, Ga.) led all players with nine rebounds.
- South Florida won the rebounding battle, 37-29.
