TAMPA (November 25, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls (2-5) got off to a slow start on Friday afternoon, but found its offensive rhythm for its second straight victory – a 75-60 triumph over St. Francis College of Brooklyn (2-4).
South Florida dominated the paint, 40-10, backed by Russel Tchewa's season-high 16 points. The big man went 8-for-10 from the field; setting a new career high in field goals made.
"We forced some shots early, but settled in and started moving the ball better, and played good basketball after the slow start," said head coach Brian Gregory. "We shot the ball well from three, hit our free throws and did a good job in the post. Our depth has been tested some while we are down a few guys the last few games, but I thought some players have really stepped up to give us good minutes. We're starting to see things trend in the right direction."
The Bulls shot 46 percent from the field, including a 52 percent clip in the second half, but missed 11 straight field goals early in the first half and saw the Terriers get out to a 16-9 lead.
Serrel Smith Jr. broke the spell for USF at the 10:23 mark. A basket by Trey Moss with 8:34 left in the half then sparked a 16-0 run for the Bulls. Ryan Conwell capped the surge with a three-pointer for a 30-25 lead with 3:33 left in the half and USF took a 36-33 advantage into the break.
South Florida never relinquished its lead, but St. Francis made it a 48-47 contest at the 10:30 mark of the second half. The Bulls answered with a 12-0 run and never looked back.
