Â
TAMPA (Feb. 19, 2022) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team got back to work on Saturday, falling in a grueling 4-2 match against Liberty at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
Â
The Bulls made quick work of the Flames during the doubles portion of the match to take the doubles point.
Â
Kiana Mokhtari and
Laura Pellicer dominated in their contest on court three to get the ball rolling taking the first match, 6-2. That was followed soon after by
Amelie Boy and
Sierra Berry, who had a tougher match on court one but ground out a hard-fought 6-5 win to put the Bulls on top heading into singles.
Berry didn't see any letdown in singles as she put the Green and Gold on top, 2-0, with a commanding 6-0, 6-1 win on court two.
Â
The Flames, however, took control but didn't have an easy time putting South Florida away.
Â
After leveling the match up at 2-2 with wins on courts four (6-1, 6-1) and six (6-1, 6-2), Liberty came up against some adversity on courts three and one.
Â
Laura Pellicer won the first set on court three, 6-2, only to have the Flames take set two 4-6. Pellicer had a 5-3 lead in the third set, however, after a close baseline call, fell 5-7, to put Liberty up 3-2.
Â
Grace Schumacher looked to even the match on court one, but dropped the first set, 3-6, before falling in a grueling second set tie-breaker, 6-7 (4-7) as the Flames clinched the match.
Â
Margriet Timmermans took the first set on court five, in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (8-6), and found herself in a second-set tiebreaker, 6-6 (1-4), with her match going unfinished as Liberty secured the victory.
