Â
TAMPA (Feb. 5, 2022) – The University of South Florida men's tennis team kicked off its 2022 schedule at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts with a Saturday doubleheader against instate foes Florida Atlantic and North Florida, splitting the afternoon with a tough 4-3 loss to FAU and a well-earned 4-1 win over UNF.
Â
The Bulls opened the day with a marathon match against Florida Atlantic that ended in a 4-3 loss.
Â
In doubles against the Owls, the Bulls' No. 2 duo of
Chase Ferguson and
Antonio Muniz opened play with a convincing 6-3 win. Florida Atlantic fought back and claimed the victory on court three in a tight 7-6 affair that fell to the Owls after a 7-3 tiebreaker. In the end, the Bulls claimed the doubles point on the heels of their No. 1 team of
Rithvik Bollipalli and
Bruno Oliveira, with a 7-5 win.
Â
In singles play, the Owls opened the scoring by taking court three over
Ivan Yatsuk in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2, but
Sergio Gomez Montesa quickly responded by taking court five in straight sets, 6-4, 6-0, to put the Bulls up 2-1.
Â
FAU fought back claiming the No. 3 and No. 6 courts. On court two,
Antonio Muniz escaped his match with a hard-fought 6-3, 5-7, 6-4 win.
Â
With the match tied three to three, all attention turned to No. 4 singles between Oliveira and the Owls' Gerard Escandell. The match went the distance as both players traded sets to start. In the end, Escandell came out on top in a tightly contested third set that went to a tiebreaker, claiming court four, 0-6, 6-4, 7-6 (9-7), and giving the Owls the victory.
Â
The second match of the day against North Florida featured only singles because of how late in the day the match started. That did not stop the Bulls from bouncing back from their tough affair with Florida Atlantic to defeat the Ospreys, 4-1.
Â
After a heartbreaking loss earlier against FAU, Oliveira put up a dominant performance when he claimed No. 4 doubles in straight sets, 6-1, 6-3. That win opened the flood gates for USF. Ferguson followed Olivera's win by winning on court one in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 3 position Gomez Montesa claimed his match in three sets, 2-6, 6-4, 6-0, followed by
Manuel Goncalves who solidified the match on court six, 6-3, 1-6, 6-2.
Â
In his first collegiate match,
Tom Pisane was impressive on court five, leading 3-6, 7-5, 1-0 at the time that his match was called due to the Bulls' victory.
Â
Up Next
The Bulls return home to the Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday, Feb. 12 at 1:30 p.m. when they host No. 19 Texas A&M.
