TAMPA (March 14, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls open a stretch of four games this week with a rematch against FIU on Tuesday in Miami. Following the midweek contest, the Bulls return to Tampa for a three-game weekend series against Mercer (15-1) at USF Baseball Stadium beginning Friday, March 18.
South Florida posted its first shutout of the seven against FIU two weeks ago in a 7-0 victory in Tampa. Carmine Lane paced the offense with a two-hit day and Bobby Boser recorded his first collegiate home run.
The Panthers have lost nine straight games, including a 9-4 loss on Sunday that took 20 innings to conclude. FIU went through eight pitchers in that ballgame.
The Bulls are coming off their third straight weekend series win after battling back from a three-run deficit to claim an 8-7 victory on Sunday over Bradley. Lane belted a walk-off homer in the ninth inning for USF.
Lane leads the Bulls with a .379 batting average to go along with five home runs and a team-best 21 RBI. Drew Brutcher is hitting .359 with 19 RBI and leads USF with six homers. Lane, Brutcher and Daniel Cantu have each reached base safely in 16 straight games to begin the season. Cantu leads the way with a .485 OBP.
True freshman Jackson Mayo was named this week's AAC Player of the Week after hitting .500 (9-for-18) with a double, two home runs and four RBI over five games last week. His first two collegiate homers, both coming on Friday against Bradley, led USF to 6-3 win. Fellow rookie Marcus Brodil also blasted his first collegiate long ball in that game.
Hunter Mink was named to this week's American Honor Roll after recording a win and two saves in three appearances last week. The right-hander has struck out 18 batters over 10.0 IP of scoreless work this season and has five saves.
