TAMPA (March 21, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls open a string of four games this week with a Tuesday tilt at FGCU. Following the midweek matchup, the Bulls return to Tampa for their sixth straight weekend of games in Tampa. South Florida will host Niagara University this weekend in search of its fifth straight series win.
Carmine Lane gave the Bulls their fourth straight series win with a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth on Sunday against (RV) Mercer. It was the second straight weekend Lane walked off a series win after launching a solo homer in the ninth inning the previous Sunday against Bradley. The redshirt-sophomore enters the week leading the USF in batting average (.376) and RBI (26), and is second in longballs (5).
Drew Brutcher has a team-leading seven homers to go along with 22 RBI. The sophomore has reached base safely in all 20 games to date which is a new career high. Nelson Rivera has reached base safely in nine straight, including an eight-game hitting streak.
Matt Ruiz was named to the AAC Honor Roll on Monday after posting a .500 OBP and a .426 batting average last week with a pair of doubles, four RBI, five runs scored and a stolen base. Ruiz joins Lane, Jack Jasiak and Hunter Mink who have also earned Honor Roll nods this season.
Jackson Mayo was named the AAC Player of the Week last Monday. The true freshman is currently third on the team with a .333 batting average and has three home runs.
FGCU enters Tuesday on a five-game winning streak and is 10-3 overall at home this season. The Eagles are 10-2 all-time against the Bulls in Fort Myers. FGCU has won six straight meetings against USF, each coming last season, which snapped a three-game winning streak for the Bulls in the series. Three of those games last year were decided by three runs or fewer and one was an extra-inning affair.
Ian Farrow was just named the ASUN Player of the Week on Monday after hitting .625 (10-for-16) with a pair of homers, two doubles, six RBI and 12 runs scored. The sophomore is batting .368 on the season with a team-high seven home runs and 29 RBI.
Seven regular starters in the FGCU lineup are batting over .300 this year as the Eagles enter the week with a .321 team batting average.
