Errors Plague Bulls in War On I-4 Loss

TAMPA, Fla., March 25, 2022 – The University of South Florida softball team finished with four errors on Saturday evening, allowing four unearned runs to score in a 7-2 loss against UCF.

Central Florida struck quickly in the game, taking a 2-0 lead in the first off a two-run home run from Shannon Doherty.

The Bulls responded in its half of the first. Alexis Johns (Sarasota) reached on a walk then stole second. She advanced to third on a groundout, then scored on another groundout despite being looked back to third initially.

UCF answered by stringing together a walk and two singles to extend its lead back to two.

South Florida's first error in the third allowed Central Florida to plate three runs in the frame, and three errors in the fourth capped UCF's scoring, putting them ahead 7-1.

USF shrunk the lead down to five in the fifth. A successful double-steal attempt allowed Johns to score her second run of the day and her 31st of the year.

Notables
  • Johns now has 35 stolen bases this season, just three behind the single-season record set last year by AnaMarie Bruni. She also has 57 in her career at USF, claiming tenth on USF's all-time list in less than two full seasons. Her 35 stolen bases are first in the country.
  • Jordyn Kadlub (Wesley Chapel) went two-for-three in the game.
  • Lauren Bevis (St. John's, Fla.) recorded her first career hit.
