Green earns first collegiate win at Trinity Forest Invitational
DALLAS, Texas (March 8, 2022) – University of South Florida sophomore Melanie Green (Medina, N.Y.) was one of just two players to shoot even par at the Trinity Forest Invitational and tied atop the leaderboard at the conclusion of 54 holes on Tuesday to take home first collegiate win.
The Bulls collectively placed fourth in the 16-team field with a score of 903. No. 23 Texas Tech won the two-day event with a score of 886. Tulsa placed second with a team score of 900 while South Florida finished ahead of No. 4 Dallas Baptist (910), and conference foes SMU (910), Tulane (914) and Memphis (928).
USF finished strong in the final round, posting its best team score of the event (294), as did Green with a two-under-par 70.
"This event really challenged us," said head coach Erika Brennan. "Between the sleet and the wind, we are so proud of the way the girls hung in there. Their attitudes and focus were outstanding. Melanie was so strong from start to finish. She does all the right things and has done so much work on the mental side of the game as well. To close out an event and emerge as champion in these conditions is special."
Green carded rounds of par or better twice and finished with a 54-hole total of 216 (74, 72, 70). She has now shot par or better in 14 of her 17 rounds this season. Green's 10 total birdies at the tournament tied for the most of any player. She also led all players in scoring on par-4 holes at 3.90.
Ana Maria Barriga (Neiva, Columbia) tied for eighth individually, earning her first top-10 finish, with a score of 222. Barriga shot an even-par 72 in Tuesday's final round, one stroke off her career best. Her 38 total pars over 54 holes were the third-most among all players.
Morgan Baxendale (Windermere) tied for 35th place, followed by Ashley Zagers (Oldsmar) in a tied for 55th place and Leonor Medeiros (Palmela, Portugal) tied for 65th. Juliana Camargo (Bogota, Columbia) competed as an individual and tied for 62nd in the 83-plalyer field.
