Bulls fall to Tigers for second straight day

Brad Lord struck out five over 5.0 IP on Saturday for USF.

TAMPA (April 15, 2022) – The University of South Florida's midseason slump continued on Friday afternoon as the Bulls dropped the second straight game of a three-game series to the University of Memphis at USF Baseball Stadium, 7-3.

Memphis narrowly out-hit South Florida in the ballgame, 12-10, but the Tigers recorded five extra-base hits while the Bulls settled for just 10 singles. USF went 4-for-21 with runners on base and just 2-for-15 with runners in scoring position, which has been one of the Bulls' lingering problems during their recent skid.

USF entered the month of April winners of nine of the previous 10 games, but have since lost nine of the last 10.

The loss drops USF to 19-16 (1-7 AAC) and Memphis improves to 15-15 (3-5 AAC) with the win.

Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) went 2-for-4 for the second straight game and continues to lead the American Athletic Conference with 52 hits this season.

Nick Gonzalez (Tampa) and Matt Ruiz (Hialeah) also finished the day with two hits apiece. Ruiz, Jackson Mayo (St. Johns) and Nelson Rivera (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) accounted for USF's RBI production on Friday.

Brad Lord (Crawfordville) allowed four runs on five hits with five strikeouts over 5.0 IP in his starting effort.

The Tigers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning and stretched their lead to 3-0 in the third before the Bulls got on the board in the bottom half of the frame. USF cut its deficit to 3-2 in the fourth, but stranded a pair of runners on base for the second straight inning with a chance to tie the game or take the lead.

Memphis proceeded to post four unanswered runs from the fifth through seven innings to stretch its advantage and hold on for the victory.

Notable

  • Lane now has 16 multi-hit games this season after recording 21 during his Freshman All-American campaign in 2021.
