NEW ORLEANS, La. (April 7, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls are on the road for the second straight weekend of American Athletic Conference play and will face off against the Tulane Green Wave for the first time during the regular season since 2019.
South Florida and Tulane met three times last season, each game during the AAC Tournament in Clearwater. The Bulls won two of those matchups, including the finale to punch their ticket to the conference tournament championship game.
During that final meeting, Brad Lord tossed a gem for USF. The right-hander blanked Tulane and allowed just four hits and struck out eight over 6.0 IP. Orion Kerkering pitched the final three innings to record the save. Both pitchers will face off against the Green Wave once again this weekend in New Orleans.
The Bulls are looking to shake off a four-game skid after dropping all three games to begin AAC play in Orlando last weekend and falling in a high-scoring affair at home on Tuesday to UNF, 13-10. Prior to that USF had won six straight and hadn't lost back-to-back games all season.
Drew Brutcher and Carmine Lane continue to pace the South Florida offense and are among the AAC offensive leaders. Brutcher leads the league in homers (10) and ranks second in OBP (.485). Lane leads the conference in RBI (36) and total bases (74). Brutcher is tied for second in the AAC in RBI (30).
Roberto Pena continues to swing a hot bat and is hitting .333 with two doubles, two homers and 10 RBI over his last 10 games. That span also includes 11 walks, 10 runs scored and a .535 OBP. Nelson Rivera has reached base safely in 16 straight games for the Bulls.Â
Head coach Billy Mohl's alma mater, Tulane, was picked second in the 2022 AAC preseason coaches poll. Offensively and on the mound, the Green Wave have impressed this season. Tulane ranks fourth in the NCAA in doubles (76), 36th in runs scored (281) and is 50th in team ERA (4.17).
South Florida ranks seventh in the country in total walks (170) and 31st in OBP (.403) and 52nd in runs (206).
Probable Pitching Matchups
Friday – RHP Orion Kerkering (4-2, 2.20 ERA) vs. RHP Grant Siegel (5-0, 1.00 ERA)
Saturday – RHP Brad Lord (2-3, 4.78 ERA) vs. LHP Dylan Carmouche (3-1, 4.54 ERA)
Sunday – LHP Ethan Brown (1-0, 5.14 ERA) vs. RHP Michael Massey (2-0, 3.89 ERA)
