Bulls’ late rally comes up short against Stetson

Daniel Cantu went 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles in Tuesday’s 6-4 loss.

TAMPA (May 17, 2022) – The University of South Florida Bulls (26-26) scored twice in the bottom of the ninth inning and brought the winning run to the plate with one out, but the Stetson Hatters (24-28) held off the home team's rally for a 6-4 victory on Tuesday night at USF Baseball Stadium.

South Florida trailed 6-2 heading to the bottom of the ninth when Daniel Cantu (Jacksonville) recorded his second double of the night to spark a late comeback bid. Two batters later, Jackson Mayo (St. Johns) walked and Ben Rozenblum (Coral Springs) followed with a two-run double to make it a two-run ballgame.

Bobby Boser (Wesley Chapel) was next with a walk to put the tying runs on base with only one out, but the Hatters held on by keeping both runners in place and recording the final two outs of the contest.

Mayo and Boser, both true freshman, each homered for USF in the fifth inning.

Notable

  • Cantu finished the night 3-for-4 for his 13th multi-hit game of the year (second-most on the team).
  • Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) tallied his American Athletic Conference leading 73rd hit.
  • Rozenblum has hit safely in six of eight games since returning from a broken foot that forced him to miss 13 games.
  • Hunter Mink (Palm Harbor) and Jack Cebert (Tampa) each turned in scoreless relief appearances from the bullpen.
