TAMPA (May 18, 2022) – The 2022 regular season will come to a close this weekend when the University of South Florida Bulls host the Wichita State Shockers. All eight league teams will head to BayCare Ballpark in Clearwater next week for the American Championship beginning on Tuesday, May 24.
Due to inclement weather forecast during the series, game times have been altered from the original schedule.
Prior to Saturday's finale, the Bulls will recognize Jarrett Eaton, Devin Hemenway, Nick Gonzalez, Jack Jasiak and Brad Lord. Those five players each earned their degrees during USF's 2022 spring graduation earlier this month.
The Bulls and Shockers split a four-game series in Wichita last season and last met when South Florida posted a 7-2 win in the opening round of last year's AAC Tournament. The series marks only the second all-time visit to Tampa by the Shockers and first since 2019.
Wichita State enters the series red-hot after a sweep of Tulane last weekend and an 18-0 non-conference win over Oklahoma on Monday. The sweep over Tulane lifted the Shockers out of the cellar of the American standings.
South Florida enters the final weekend looking to shake off a four-game skid. The Bulls took two of three from UCF in their last home AAC series on May 6-8.
Carmine Lane continues to lead the American in hits (73) and ranks second with a career-high 50 RBI. Lane batted .435 with five extra-base hits, three homers and six RBI against WSU last season. Daniel Cantu hit .368 with three-extra base hits, two homers and six RBI over five games against the Shockers.
Ben Rozenblum has reached base safely in seven of eight games (hit safely in six) since missing 13 games with a broken foot. Drew Brutcher has a pair of doubles and four walks since hits return last weekend after missing 14 games. His 35 walks lead USF this season. The Bulls collectively rank 48th in the NCAA in total walks (250).
Marcus Brodil enters the weekend batting .316 with four doubles over his last 10 games. He and fellow true freshman Jackson Mayo have combined for 27 extra-base hits, 10 HR and 40 RBI this season.
Nick Gonzalez ranks third in the league with a .375 batting average over conference-only games.
