Bulls drop midweek tilt at Florida

Carmine Lane recorded a pair of hits and continues to lead the AAC with 65.

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (May 3, 2022) – Returning to the site of their 2021 regional championship, the University of South Florida Bulls (23-21) did not have the same success on Tuesday night as their last visit to Gainesville, falling 18-3 to the University of Florida (26-18).

The night started out promising for South Florida as the American Athletic Conference's hit leader Carmine Lane (Lake Placid) opened the ballgame with a leadoff single. Lane came around to score on a groundout by Sonny Rao (Orlando) to stake the Bulls to an early 1-0 lead.

Florida's Jud Fabian erased the USF advantage with a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning on his way to a hitting three home runs in the game.

Nick Gonzalez (Tampa) and Nelson Rivera (Tao Alto, Puerto Rico) each recorded RBI for South Florida. Lane and Marcus Brodil (Dunedin) finished with two hits apiece.

Notable

  • Lane's 65 hits and 48 RBI each lead the AAC this season.
  • Joey Volini (Tampa) and Caleb Pundsack (Groveland) each tossed scoreless innings of relief for USF.
