USF Welcomes SMU to Corbett Stadium for AAC Matchup

TAMPA, Fla. (October 14, 2023) – The University of South Florida women's soccer team is back on the pitch on Sunday for an American Athletic Conference matchup with SMU. The first touch between the Bulls (7-5-1, 3-1-1 AAC) and the Mustangs (7-3-1, 3-1-1 AAC) is scheduled for 1 p.m. on ESPN+.
 
After a game-winning performance, Signe Markvardsen was named to the College Soccer News Women's Team of the Week as well as the American Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week. She led the team with a perfect shot-on-goal percentage of 1.000. She recorded the game-winning goal for the USF victory over UAB on the road in the 80th minute. She also played a key role in the South Florida defense, keeping UAB off the scoreboard. She recorded the second goal of her career. Both goals have come this season.
 
Sunday's match is part of homecoming weekend, Bark with the Bulls, and Youth Day. The Dog Moms of Tampa and the Mercy Full Project will have dogs in attendance. Concession will be offering $2 hot dogs and there will be pup cups offered for our four-legged friends.
 
Bulls at a Glance
Anna Sutter leads the team with six goals and 12 points. She is tied for 119th in the NCAA with 0.46 goals per match, which is sixth in the conference. Her six goals are tied for 115th in the country. Georgia Brown is second on the team with 11 points, five goals and one assist. Gentiana Fetaj is currently tied for 40th in the nation with six assists, which is second in The American. She is tied for 41st in the nation and is second for the conference with 0.46 assists per match. Fetaj has added a goal and is third on the squad with eight points. Markvardsen is third on the team with three goals. Kouri Peace, Micahela Hill, Vivianne Bessette, and Peyton Vincze are tied for third on the team with two goals each. Amaris Hamilton-Grein, Regan Kelly, and Kendall Lincoln have all added one goal. Serita Thurton is second on the squad with four assists. Bessette, Vincze, and Jaide Simone Prejean, all have two assists apiece on the season. Hamilton-Grein, Hill, Peace, Linnea Nestor, Elyse Thornton, and Olivia Mancini all have one assist. Leire Herraez Gallach has a team-best 34 saves in 11 matches. Arden La-Rose has appeared in six matches and has eight saves on the year. As a team, USF is tied for 32nd in the country with 7.92 shots on goal per match, which is third in The American. With 1.77 assists per match, the Bulls are tied for 59th in the NCAA and are third in the AAC. South Florida is tied for 74th in the NCAA with 26 goals, 72nd in the country with 76 points, and 73rd in the nation with 23 assists.
 
Series History with SMU
USF and SMU will meet for the 12 time on Sunday. The Bulls hold an 8-2-1 series advantage. South Florida has won six of the last seven meetings, including a 1-0 victory at SMU last season. USF is 3-2-0 at home against SMU.
 
Scouting the Mustangs
Nyah Rose leads the Mustangs with 0.73 goals per game, which is tied for 21st in the NCAA and tops in the American. She has a team-best 18 points, with eight goals and two assists. Eliana Salama is second on the squad with seven points, three assists and two goals. Peyton Annen, Leah Chancey, and Mayu Inokawa are all tied for second on the team with two goals. Emma Alvord and Mackenzie Rudden are tied for second on the squad with two assists. Samantha Estrada has a team-best 44 saves in 10 matches.

The 2023 season marks the 17th and final for head coach Denise Schilte-Brown at the helm of the Bulls. Schilte-Brown guided South Florida to the program's first-ever NCAA Tournament in 2010 and the Bulls have made eight total postseason appearances (2014, 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021) in the last 13 years. USF posted five consecutive seasons with a conference championship, winning the regular-season title in 2018, 2020, and 2021, while earning the tournament crown in 2017, 2019, and 2020. USF alum and Olympic Gold Medalist, Evelyne Viens, was selected fifth overall in the NWSL Draft by the Sky Blue FC, now Gotham FC. Viens was one of four Pro Bulls to participate in the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup.
