Bulls Split Final Day of the USF-Rawlings Tournament

South Florida defeated St. Joseph’s 4-0

TAMPA, Feb. 12, 2023 – The University of South Florida split the final day of the USF-Rawlings Invitational, defeating the St. Joseph's Hawks, 4-0, before falling to the Boston College Eagles, 5-4, on Sunday in nine innings.

GAME 1 -St. Joseph's 0, USF 4

Senior Meghan Sheehan (Forest Hills, Md.) led the third inning off with a single. The Bulls capitalized on the hit when sophomore Lydia Castro (Lithia) hit a two-run home run, the first of season for USF.

South Florida would strike again in the fifth inning when Sheehan hit a single and then advanced on an error by the Hawks to bring Emilee Hanlon (Dunkirk, N.Y.) across the plate. Later in the same inning, redshirt-freshman Tieley Vaughn (Wesley Chapel) grounded out to the second basemen, but Sheehan crossed the plate to give the Green and Gold the 4-0 lead.

Payton Dixon (Smyrna, Del.)  earned her second start of the season in the first game of the Bulls double header. She continued where she left off on Thursday, retiring nine of the first 13 batters. The Hawks were held hitless until the fourth innings.

GAME 2- Boston College 5, USF 4

The Bulls got some spark in them in the bottom of the fourth inning when Castro and Vivian Ponn (Fort Meyers) were hit by a pitch. The Bulls would load the bases but couldn't bring a run home.

It would be the fifth inning before South Florida would get on the board. Kathy Garcia-Soto reached base on a fielder's choice and then advanced to third on a Boston College throwing error. A wild pitch by Suzanna Anderson allowed Garcia-Soto to cross the plate.

Emma Humplik (Orange, Texas) started the sixth inning with a single to third base. Hanlon pinch ran and immediately stole second base to put herself in scoring position. Back-to-back sacrifice hits from Marissa Trivelpiece (Sugarloaf, Pa.) and Hallie Bryant (Trenton) brought Hanlon home to tie the game at two.

The Bulls and Eagles went into extra innings. Boston College scored in the eighth inning and the Bulls retaliated in the bottom half when Julia Mrochko (Drums, Pa.) scored off Trivelpiece's sacrifice fly. The Eagles took the lead in the top of the ninth. South Florida added one run but the Eagles prevailed.
