Bulls suffer sweep at Memphis

Drew Brutcher hit his 31st career home run in Sunday’s 8-6 loss.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (May 7, 2023) – The University of South Florida (18-31, 6-12 AAC) dropped an 8-6 decision on Sunday afternoon at the University of Memphis (26-22, 8-10 AAC) as the Tigers completed a three-game weekend sweep of the Bulls.

The South Florida offense did its best to overcome defeat in the series finale as Rafael Betancourt (Deltona) and Joaquin Monque (Weston) connected on back-to-back homers in the eighth inning, while Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) connected on his 31st career home run at USF in the ninth inning, but it wasn't enough.

Memphis also launched three home runs in the game, including a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning to take an early lead which the Tigers never relinquished.

Lawson Gailey (Lavonia, Ga.) made his third straight weekend start and allowed four runs on six hits with one walk over 3.2 IP.

Daniel Cantu (Jacksonville) and John Montes (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) each recorded three hits for USF. Monque and Rafael Betancourt (Deltona) drove in two runs apiece.
