TAMPA (July 11, 2022) – University of South Florida product Shane McClanahan was named to the Major League Baseball All-Star Team for the second straight season. The southpaw became the first former Bull named to an All-Star Team last season and was tabbed the American League's starting pitcher for the 2022 game in Los Angeles.
The 2023 All-Stat Game is set for Tuesday, July 11 at 8 p.m. ET in Seattle.
McClanahan may have been in line for the starting role once again this season, but has been sidelined with an injury since June 22. He is eligible to come off the IL on July 16 for the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays.
The Rays entered the All-Star break with a 58-35 record, the best mark in the American League and second-base in baseball.
The former Bull (2016-18) owns an 11-1 record with a 2.53 ERA and 101 strikeouts this season over 96.0 IP for the Rays in 2023. In his young career, McClanahan is 33-15 with a 2.82 ERA and 436 strikeouts over 385.2 IP. The left-hander became the first pitcher in Major League history to make a debut in the postseason when he appeared in the ALDS on October 5, 2020.
McClanahan was drafted in the first round with the 31st overall pick in the 2018 MLB Draft by Tampa Bay. After his 2020 postseason debut, he was the Rays' game one starter in the 2021 postseason and has been the team's opening day starter in each of the last two seasons. McClanahan finished sixth in the 2022 AL Cy young voting with a 12-8 record, 2.54 ERA, 0.93 WHIP and 194 punchouts over 166.1 IP.
McClanahan is one 12 players (eight pitchers) to be drafted under head coach Billy Mohl since 2018.
