TAMPA (September 28, 2023) – The University of South Florida sailing team competed back-to-back this weekend in the SAISA Conference Top 12 Women's Regatta, hosted by Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida on Saturday and the Sugar Bowl Regatta hosted by Tulane University in New Orleans, on Sunday.Â
In the SAISA Conference top 12, twelve teams competed, and USF entered two full teams, capturing first overall. Seniors Emma Shakespeare and Hannah Marsicano ended 2nd in A division, while juniors Eden Nykamp and Janie Powell finished 1st in B division.Â
The USF JV team ended up 7th overall. Heidi Hicks, Dana Aljasir, and Madisen Hamai ended 7th in A division, and Marina Dreyfuss, Ochi Fernando, and Jordan MacMoyle finished 5th in B division.
At the Sugar Bowl Regatta, the USF Women's team of juniors Kay Brunsvold and Kalea Woodard finished 5th in A division while first-year Kailey Warrior and senior Min Min Kelly finished 4th in B division. Combining the scores, the USF team ended up 5th overall against the 8 teams competing. Conditions were extremely challenging, as competitors were plagued by light, shifty winds with several races abandoned. Sunday was a true test of endurance as competitors were on the water over 5 hours without a break.
About USF Sailing
The USF sailing program has reached the national finals in 10 of the last 11 years. The Bulls finished in the top 10 during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The sailing team is based out of St. Petersburg and has been led since 2014 by head coach Allison Jolly, a former USA Olympian, 2016 Florida Sports Hall of Fame inductee and 2019 U.S. National Sailing Hall of Fame inductee.
