NEW ORLEANS, September 24, 2025 – The University of South Florida women's sailing team placed third at the Sugar Bowl Women's Regatta, hosted by Tulane in New Orleans, September 20-21. The regatta featured five programs, including two top finishers from the spring 2025 national championships – Stanford and Tulane, along with South Florida, Wisconsin, and Jacksonville.
In an uncommon format, each team entered three divisions, with all races sailed together for a 15-boat fleet. 14 races were completed in steady winds ranging from 4 to 10 knots.
USF posted a solid all-around performance to secure a third-place finish behind Stanford and Tulane. A Division sailors
Kailey Warrior (Junior) and
Madisen Hamai (Senior) finished fourth overall, highlighted by victories in two races. B Division sailors
Ghislaine van Empel (Junior) and
Cate Brennan (Senior) closed the weekend tied for eighth overall, while C Division sailors
Grace Jones (Sophomore) and
Melissa Janes (Senior) also tied for eighth, notching a race victory.

The USF sailing program has reached the national finals in 11 of the last 12 years. The Bulls finished in the top 10 during the 2012 and 2013 seasons. The sailing team is based out of St. Petersburg and has been led since 2014 by head coach
