South Florida Welcomes UAB for Weekend Matchup

TAMPA, September 28, 2023 – The University of South Florida volleyball team will welcome AAC newcomers, the University of Alabama-Birmingham Blazers to the Yuengling Center on Friday and Saturday for Camper Reunion Weekend.
 
Last week, the Bulls started AAC play by welcoming Tulane and then traveling to Memphis. South Florida starts AAC play with a 2-1 record for the first time since 2020, when they started 3-1. Buse Hazan (Istanbul, Turkey) set a new career high of 21 kills in Saturday's 3-0 win over Memphis.
 
South Florida has served 107 aces as a team this season. They lead the American Athletic Conference in team total aces and aces per set. The Bulls averaged 1.98 aces per set, which ranks 23rd in the nation. The 107 aces as a team ranks 15th in the nation. 
 
In the Bull's 3-0 win over Alabama A&M, Marta Cvtikovic (Rejika, Croatia) served eight aces, which tied for fifth for an individual single-match record. The record is 14, set by Belinda Spivey in 1986 against Temple. 
 
Head coach Jolene Shepardson has been a head coach for 13 seasons. She has 146 wins as a head coach. She needs four more to reach 150 in her career.

Scouting the opponent:
  • UAB is looking for its first conference win in the American Athletic. They have played Rice and ECU so far.
  • Kelsey Smith leads the Blazers with 154 kills and 25 service aces.
  • Defensively, the Blazers are led by Madison Page who has 43 blocks this season.
About USF Volleyball
Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her fourth season at the helm of her alma mater in 2023. Named head coach on Jan. 8, 2020, Shepardson led the Bulls' program to its last conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance as a student-athlete in 2002. USF made its last postseason appearance in 2018, posting 20 wins and appearing in the NIVC. USF Volleyball has made seven NCAA Tournament appearances and won 12 conference titles since its inception in 1972. The Bulls play in The Corral (1,000), adjacent to the Yuengling Center on the USF campus.
