USF Women’s Tennis opens spring slate with sweep of FGCU

The Bulls posted a 7-0 victory to begin the campaign on Saturday afternoon.

Tampa, Fla. (January 20, 2024) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team embarked on its spring campaign with a dominant 7-0 victory over Florida Gulf Coast University on Saturday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.

South Florida recorded straight set wins in five of the six doubles matches.

On a crisp Tampa afternoon, the Bulls came out of the gate hot, securing the team doubles point with victories on courts one and two. Grace Schumacher and Nadja Bay Christians earned a 6-4 win at Doubles No. 1 and Ireland Simme and newcomer Rhea Makesar tallied a 6-3 triumph at Doubles No. 2.

Schumacher was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at Singles No. 1 with a gritty comeback in the second set. Bay Christians was a 6-0, 6-2 winner at No. 2. Melisa Senli claimed Singles No. 3 by scores of 6-1, 6-2. No. 4 Kelly Vargas outlasted her opponent in a tiebreaker set, 6-4, 1-6, 10-4. Marta Falceto Font posted a 6-1, 6-2 win at Singles No. 5 and Gargi Pawar made quick work of her foe in Singles No. 6, 6-0, 6-1.

The Bulls will travel to Athens, Georgia for the ITA Kickoff for a pair of matches on January 26-27. USF opens play against host Georgia on Friday, January 26 at 2:30 p.m. and will face either Arizona of South Carolina the following day.
