USF Women’s Tennis takes down No. 74 Michigan State

Playing their second straight ranked opponent, the Bulls produced a 4-2 victory.

TAMPA (February 28, 2024) – The University of South Florida women's tennis team (5-6) dominated the singles courts on Wednesday afternoon and defeated No. 74 Michigan State, 4-2.

"I'm really proud of the team for earning a great team win today," said head coach Cristina Moros. "Our team has been going through a lot and I am very proud of the toughness they showed to pull off a win against a great Michigan State team. We're looking forward to competing again on Friday."

The victory snapped a three-game skid for the Bulls amidst a grueling schedule with a two-game trip to Louisiana, including a match at LSU, and hosting No. 11 Auburn just three days before taking on Michigan State.

After falling behind in the doubles point to the Spartans, the Bulls began their charge, sparked by veteran Grace Schumacher in a decisive straight set win on Court 1. Michigan State went back in front on the team scoreboard, 2-1, with its lone singles win before South Florida rattled off three straight wins to claim the match.

Ireland Simme stood tall on Court 6 with a 7-6 (7-4), 6-4 victory. Melisa Senli was next on Court 2, storming back for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-3 win. Gargi Pawar, as she's previously done this season, went on to clinch the match on Court 5. Pawar and her opponent went the distance in a 7-5, 6-7 (4-7), 6-3 decision.
