Bulls drop AAC opener to Memphis

Marcus Brodil went 3-for-3 with a homer in USF’s 16-7 loss on Friday.

TAMPA (March 22, 2024) – The Memphis Tigers (12-12, 1-0 AAC) belted five home runs on Friday night at USF Baseball Stadium and used an eight-run third inning in a 16-7 win over the University of South Florida Bulls (12-10, 0-1 AAC) in the first game of conference play.

Memphis entered the three-game weekend series ranked 22nd in the NCAA in home runs (37) and hit two of its five in the game during an eight-run third inning.

Ben Rozenblum (Coral Springs), John Montes (Toa Alto, Puerto Rico) and Marcus Brodil (Dunedin) each homered for the Bulls. Rozenblum's two-run blast gave South Florida a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning and the Bulls led 3-1 after two innings before the Tigers' offensive unloaded in the third frame.

Brodil finished the game 3-for-3 with a home run, walk and two runs scored. Drew Brutcher (Lakeland) also had a three-hit night with a pair of RBI.

Notable
  • Jackson Mayo (St. Johns) had his career-best 11-game hitting streak come to an end on Friday.
  • Tanner Mink (Palm Harbor) and Austin Newton (Tampa) combined for three scoreless innings of relief to finish the game.
