USF Men’s Basketball Drops Tough One to No. 14 Memphis

It is the first time since March 5, 2011, that the Bulls had four players score 10 or more points against an Associated Press (AP) top 15 team

TAMPA, Fla., Feb. 13, 2025 – The University of South Florida men's basketball team battled No. 14 ranked Memphis inside the Yuengling Center on Thursday. Four USF players finished the game in double digits, but the Bulls (12-13, 5-7) fell to the American Athletic Conference (AAC) leading Tigers (21-4, 11-1) 80-65.
 
Kobe Knox, Brandon Stroud, and Jayden Reid all recorded 11 points. Knox and Reid tied for a team-high three assists. Stroud collected six rebounds, while Reid had five boards. Jamille Reynolds brought down a team-high eight rebounds to go along with 10 points. He added an assist and had the lone block for USF. It is the first time since March 5, 2011, against St. John's that the Bulls had four players score 10 or more points against an AP top 15 team.
 
Reid tallied a game-high three steals. He has produced three or more steals against two AP top 25 teams this season. He joins Anthony Collins (2011-12) and Dominique Jones (2008-09) to record three or more steals against two AP top 25 teams in a single season. CJ Brown has recorded a steal in his 10th straight game. It's the longest streak by a USF player since David Collins in 2012.
 
Reynolds opened the game with a dunk. Moments later, Knox provided a highlight dunk of his own. The Tigers held an 11-10 lead with just under 15 minutes left in the opening stanza. The Bulls went on a 5-0 run as they took a 15-12 lead, the largest of the night.
 
The Tigers went on a 12-2 run and claimed a 27-19 lead late in the first half. Memphis extended its lead to 42-27 as the game went to the half.
 
The Tigers extended their lead to 24 points, 63-39, midway through the second half. However, the Bulls were resilient and fought back. With Memphis leading 75-53, South Florida went on a 9-0 run to cut the deficit to 13, 75-62. During that stretch, the Bulls held the Tigers scoreless for 3:40.
 
Memphis went on to win the game 80-65. Dain Dainja recorded a game-high 20 points with seven rebounds. PJ Haggerty finished with 18 points, while Tyrese Hunter went for 15. Haggerty dished out a game-high four assists. Colby Rogers rounded out the double-digit scorers for the Tigers with 10 points.
 
Key Stats:
• The USF bench outscored the Memphis bench 20-15. It is the 19th time the South Florida bench has outscored their opponent's bench this season.
• The Bulls held the advantage in fastbreak points 19-14.
• Memphis outrebounded South Florida 51-34, including 16 offensive rebounds. This led to a 16-4 edge in second-chance points.
• The Tigers shot 40.3 percent from the field and 36.0 percent from 3-point range.
• Both Jayden Reid (11) and Jamille Reynolds (10) produced their 15th game in double digits.  
Kobe Knox posted his 14th game in double digits with an 11-point performance.
Brandon Stroud recorded his 1,000th career point and finished the game with 11. He finished in double figures for the eighth time.
 
Notables:
CJ Brown has recorded a steal in his 10th straight game. It's the longest streak by a USF player since David Collins in 2012.

• For the 17th time this season, six players recorded at least one assist. It is tied for the second most in the conference.
• Eight different players have recorded a rebound. It was the 21st time this season, and it is tied for the most in the AAC this season.
• Four USF players finished in double figures for the 13th time this season. It is the first time since March 5, 2011, against St. John's that the Bulls had four players score 10 or more points against an AP top 15 team.
 
Up Next:
USF returns to the court on Sunday, Feb. 16, for an AAC matchup against UAB. The Bulls and the Blazers will face off for the second time, this time in Birmingham, Alabama. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2, marking the fifth time in six games that South Florida will play on the national stage. All USF games can be heard on Bulls Unlimited.
