USF Baseball Falls to Rice

HOUSTON, TEXAS, APRIL 12, 2025- The University of South Florida baseball team (20-12; 8-3 AAC) fell to the Rice Owls (8-29; 2-9 AAC) to even the series on Saturday afternoon. The Bulls lost with a score of 15-3.
 
South Florida's first run of the game didn't come until the fifth inning. Jackson Mayo and Lance Trippel started with back-to-back hit-by-pitches. Mayo stole third and scored on the Owl's error attempt to throw him out at third. In the following inning, Ryan Pruitt earned the Bull's first hit of the game.
 
South Florida had two runners on base in the seventh inning after Matthew Buffington earned a walk and Dawson Mock singled to right center. They both advanced on stolen bases. Anthony Quigley recorded his first career RBI with a single to center field that plated Buffington and Mock. The Bulls had a chance to add more runs but left the bases loaded.
 
RHP Austin Newton made his 2025 debut. In two innings, he allowed one run and struck out two batters. RHP Jorge DeCardenas came in as relief and pitched 3.1 innings, striking out seven. RHP Matt Brown pitched 1.1 innings and struck out one.

  • Mock earned his first hit of the season.
  • Quigley earned his second and third RBI of his career.
  • Newton made his season debut adn struck out two batters. 
 Notables:
  • Marcus Brodil reached base for the 14th consecutive game, tying his season-high set through the first 14 games of the season.
  • Jackson Mayo is one home run away from breaking into the top 10 career home run list in program history. He has hit 28 home runs in his career.
