USF Baseball’s Late Rally Falls Short Against Shockers

The Bulls remain in second place in the American standings.

WICHITA, KS, APRIL 26, 2025- The University of South Florida baseball team (23-17; 11-6 American) fell to the Wichita State Shockers (13-29; 5-12 American) on Saturday night. The Bulls fell with a final score of 7-5.
 
South Florida still holds second place in the AAC standings. The Bulls are three games behind the UTSA Roadrunners (14-3). The Bulls have a one-game lead on Charlotte, East Carolina, and Florida Atlantic, who sit at 10-7.
 
South Florida scratched across five runs on five hits, highlighted by a balanced offensive effort. Ryan Pruitt and Carlos Jacome each delivered RBI hits, while Bradke Lohry added a key double and an RBI to keep the Bulls within striking distance. Lance Trippel contributed with a hit and a stolen base, maintaining pressure on the Shockers' defense.
 
Austin Newton started on the mound for USF, tossing 4.2 innings and allowing five runs while striking out five. Jorge DeCardenas pitched the final 3.1 innings, giving up two runs and striking out three.
 
After trailing early, the Bulls rallied with a run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to close the gap to two runs, but Wichita State's bullpen ultimately shut the door.
 
Notables:
  • Marcus Brodil has reached base in all 17 conference games. Overall, he has reached base in six straight games.  
  • Jackson Mayo is one home run away from breaking into the top 10 career home run list in program history. He has hit 28 home runs in his career.
  • Ryan Pruitt has reached base in 10 straight games, setting a new season high.
  • Carlos Jacome has recorded a hit in seven of his last 10 games. He has reached base in six straight.
  • Lance Trippel has a hit in four straight games and has reached base in six straight games.
