L'or Mputu and
Carla Brito both recorded double-doubles for the University of South Florida women's basketball team against East Carolina on Wednesday. The Bulls (13-10, 6-4 American) had four players score in double digits, but they fell in a heartbreaker to the Pirates (17-7, 9-2 American) 64-62.
Mputu recorded her third double-double of the season, tying for a team-high 17 points and posting a game-high 13 rebounds. It was her ninth game in double digits and her seventh with double-digit rebounds. Brito notched her fourth double-double of the year with 12 rebounds and 11 points. It was her seventh game in double digits and her fifth with double-figure rebounds. It is the second time this season that the Bulls have had two players record double-doubles in the same game. Mputu added two blocks and two assists. Brito tied for a game-high six assists, which tied a career high. She also added a steal and a block.
Katie Davidson tied for a team-high 17 points. She went 4-for-6 from 3-point range. She also recorded one rebound, one assist, one block, and one steal. It was her 15th game with double-digit scoring.
Edyn Battle closed out the double-digit scorers with 11 points. It was her 14th game with double figures. She tied for a game-high six assists. It was the ninth time this season that the Bulls had four players in double figures.
How it Happened
The first quarter was a defensive battle, as neither team scored more than 10 points. The Bulls held the Pirates to 26.3 percent shooting in the opening stanza. Mputu was tied for the game-high with four points after 10 minutes. ECU held a 10-9 lead as the game headed into the second quarter.
South Florida surged ahead in the second half with an 8-4 run and a 14-4 run. The Bulls held the Pirates scoreless for the final 3:35 of the first half. Brito tallied eight points in the second. As a team, USF shot 66.7 percent from 3-point range. The South Florida defense held East Carolina to 19.0 percent from the field and 0.00 percent (0-for-3) from 3-point range in the second quarter. At halftime, USF held ECU to 22.5 percent from the field and did not allow a 3-pointer on seven shot attempts. The Bulls took a 31-18 lead into the break.
ECU opened the second half with a 6-0 run, cutting the USF lead to 31-24. The Bulls were unfazed and answered with a 6-0 run of their own. South Florida extended its lead to 42-31 with 2:12 left in the third quarter. The Bulls led 44-35 after three quarters.
The Pirates opened the fourth quarter with a 23-7 run that gave ECU a 58-52 lead with just under three minutes remaining. The Bulls never gave up and kept fighting. Davidson hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left to make the final score 64-62, in ECU's favor.
Jayla Hearp led the Pirates with 18 points. Keanna Rembert and Anzhane' Hutton each finished with 15 points. Kennedy Fauntleroy tied for a game-high with six assists.
