June 29, 2026 | Beach Volleyball
Luna comes to South Florida following a historic season at Boise State, where he helped lead the Broncos to their first NCAA Championship appearance
TAMPA, Fla. (June 29, 2026)- USF head beach volleyball coach Jo Kremer announced the addition of Alex Luna to the Bulls' coaching staff as an assistant coach on Monday.
Luna arrives to Tampa after helping guide Boise State to its first NCAA Championship appearance and brings a wealth of Division I experience from stops at South Carolina, Stephen F. Austin, and San Jóse State.
"I am extremely excited to welcome Alex Luna to Tampa," said Kremer. "Alex brings a wealth of knowledge and experience from many different roles at multiple Division I programs and the National Team Development Pipeline. He has established a strong reputation for developing student-athletes through a creative and open-minded coaching style."
Luna most recently served as an assistant coach at Boise State, joining the Broncos in August 2024. He was involved in all aspects of the program, including day-to-day operations, practice planning, player development, scouting, recruiting, and team travel.
During his first season with the Broncos, Boise State earned its first National Championship appearance after capturing both the Southland Conference regular-season and tournament titles. Four of the Broncos' five pairs earned all-conference honors, while Allyson Alden was named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year and Newcomer of the Year.
Prior to Boise State, Luna spent the 2023 season as an assistant coach at South Carolina. He directed on-court training sessions and film study while helping the Gamecocks post a 20-16 record and reach the Coastal Collegiate Sports Association tournament championship match for the first time in program history. South Carolina also earned two major conference awards for the first time in program history, with Skylar Allen being named CCSA Scholar-Athlete of the Year and Julia Waugh earning CCSA Freshman of the Year honors.
Before his stint in Columbia, Luna founded the beach volleyball program at Stephen F. Austin and served as head coach for five seasons, from 2018 to 2022. He guided the Lumberjacks through three conference transitions while compiling 38 victories.
Luna's teams excelled in the classroom, earning the department's highest team GPA and multiple national academic honors. He also led the planning and development of a four-court beach volleyball facility, managed program budgets, coordinated team travel, spearheaded fundraising efforts that generated more than $25,000 annually and mentored graduate assistants who advanced into full-time coaching roles.
Prior to Stephen F. Austin, he spent three seasons at San José State University as an assistant coach for both the beach and indoor volleyball programs. At San Jose State, the Spartans captured the beach program's first ranked victory in 2017 when they defeated 18th ranked California.
Luna has experience working with the USA Beach National Team Development Program as a boys and girls development coach and national team scout, along with professional experience with the Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP).
A two-time recipient of the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) 30 Under 30 Award, Luna has previously been invited to present at the AVCA National Convention.
Luna earned bachelor's degrees in psychology and marketing from the University of Texas at Dallas in 2014. While at UT Dallas, he competed in both volleyball and baseball and also served as an assistant coach for the women's volleyball team.
