South Florida Volleyball Falls in Tussle with No. 11 TCU

Paula Tomasa and Iyanna Garvin each recorded double-digit kills for the Bulls
TAMPA, Fla. (September 10, 2026) – The University of South Florida volleyball team played its first match of the season at the Corral on Thursday against No. 11 TCU. Iyanna Garvin and Paula Tomasa each recorded double-digit kills, but the Bulls (1-5) fell to the Horned Frogs (4-2) in three sets (30-28, 25-17, 26-24).
Garvin was outstanding for the Bulls, posting a .529 hitting percentage with 10 kills. Defensively, she added two blocks. Tomasa led South Florida with 13 kills, five digs, and two blocks. Samiyah Abdur-Rahim hit .538 on the night, tying a career-high with nine kills. Nina Jioshvili-Ravva dished out a match-high 37 assists. Sofija Djordjevic led the Bulls with nine digs.
The match started as a back-and-forth battle, with neither team able to pull away. After the opening set was tied 10-10, the Bulls heated up and took a 15-12 lead. South Florida extended its lead to 18-14. The Bulls kept the pressure on and took a 23-18 lead late in the first set. TCU erased the USF lead and tied the first set at 23-23. The two sides continued to battle, but the Horned Frogs took the opening set 30-28.
TCU jumped out to an early 3-1 lead in the second set, but USF battled back and kept it within a point or two. The Horned Frogs took a 16-11 lead midway through the set. The Bulls kept fighting but dropped the second set 25-17.
Like the first two sets, the third set was another grind, with the score tied at 12-12 midway through. USF and TCU kept battling, and neither team could build a lead. The Bulls forced the third set past 25 points, but the Horned Frogs won 26-24 to secure the match.

Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her seventh season at the helm of her alma mater in 2026. Named head coach on January 8, 2020, as a player she helped lead the Bulls to two conference championships and a pair of NCAA tournament appearances. As head coach, she led the Bulls back to the NCAA Tournament in 2025 for the first time since she was a player in 2002 and guided USF to the 2024 AAC regular-season championship, earning her first Coach of the Year Honor. In 2023, the Bulls won the American Conference East Division, made a postseason appearance in the NIVC, and advanced to the Fab Four to mark the longest postseason run in program history.
South Florida Volleyball has won nine Player of the Year honors, most recently with Maria Clara Andrade winning American Conference honors in back-to-back years in 2024 and 2025. The Bulls have also earned four Setter of the Year honors, most recently with Caroline Dykes being recognized in 2024.
South Florida volleyball has made eight NCAA Tournament appearances and won 13 conference titles since the program's inception in 1972. The Bulls play in The Corral (1,000), located adjacent to the Yuengling Center on the USF campus in Tampa.
