South Florida Volleyball Battles Michigan for Three Sets

Laila Ivey recorded her 700th career kill
TAMPA, Fla. (September 12, 2026) – Laila Ivey surpassed the 700-kill mark with three kills in the University of South Florida volleyball team's match against Michigan on Saturday. The Bulls (1-7) fell to the Wolverines (6-2) in a 3-0 decision (26-24, 25-23, 25-20) at The Corral in front of 868 fans.
Ivey extended her career kill total to 702 with three kills tonight. Mora Pampin produced a match-high 14 kills, setting a new career high. Paula Tomasa recorded her fourth straight match with double-digit kills, highlighted by a 13-kill effort. Sofija Djordjevic collected a match-high 13 digs. Nina Jioshvili-Ravva dished out a team-high 18 assists. Emelyn Stettin dished out a career-high 15 assists. Iyanna Garvin tallied a match-high five blocks and is three blocks shy of 200 career blocks. As a team, the Bulls collected a season-best 16 blocks. South Florida outblocked Michigan 14-6.
After Michigan took a 3-2 lead to start the match, South Florida answered with a 5-0 run to take a 7-3 lead. The Wolverines pulled back within one, 10-9, but the Bulls extended their lead to 13-9 with a 3-0 run. USF took a 15-10 lead into the media timeout. Michigan tied the set at 19-19. The Wolverines won the first set 26-24. The opening stanza featured 12 ties and two lead changes.
Michigan opened the second set with a 3-0 run, but South Florida fought back to take a 5-4 lead. After the Wolverines tied it at 5-5, the Bulls went on a 4-0 run to take a 9-5 lead. Michigan tied the set at 14-14 after a 5-0 run midway through. The second set featured eight ties and two lead changes, and Michigan won it 25-23.
Michigan jumped out to an early 5-1 lead to start the third set. The Bulls kept fighting and tied the set at 11-11. The Wolverines pulled ahead to 21-16 late in the set. South Florida cut the deficit to two, 21-19, but Michigan closed out the set 25-20 and won the match.

Head coach Jolene Shepardson enters her seventh season at the helm of her alma mater in 2026. Named head coach on January 8, 2020, as a player she helped lead the Bulls to two conference championships and a pair of NCAA tournament appearances. As head coach, she led the Bulls back to the NCAA Tournament in 2025 for the first time since she was a player in 2002 and guided USF to the 2024 AAC regular-season championship, earning her first Coach of the Year Honor. In 2023, the Bulls won the American Conference East Division, made a postseason appearance in the NIVC, and advanced to the Fab Four to mark the longest postseason run in program history.
South Florida Volleyball has won nine Player of the Year honors, most recently with Maria Clara Andrade winning American Conference honors in back-to-back years in 2024 and 2025. The Bulls have also earned four Setter of the Year honors, most recently with Caroline Dykes being recognized in 2024.
