South Florida Men's Soccer Falls in Battle at No. 9 Missouri State

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (September 26, 2026) -- The University of South Florida men's soccer team fell to No. 9 Missouri State, 3-2, in an American Conference match Saturday night at Betty and Bobby Allison South Stadium. The Bulls (1-7-1, 0-2-1) pulled within a goal twice in the second half but couldn't complete the comeback against the unbeaten Bears (7-0-1, 3-0-0).
After a scoreless first half, Missouri State broke the deadlock with a pair of goals in just under four minutes. Fionn Mooney beat goalkeeper Alexis Martin to the top right corner in the 56th minute off a feed from Adrian Esteban, then doubled the lead in the 60th minute with a left-footed finish set up by Ben Furlong.
South Florida answered in the 72nd minute when Tyler Richardson, who had checked back into the match as a second-half substitute, ran onto a loose ball and buried it into the top of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1.
Missouri State restored its two-goal cushion in the 80th minute when Hugo Jinkinson finished off a Daniel Souza feed, but the Bulls would not go away. Serigne Diallo pulled USF back within one in the 85th minute, redirecting a Richardson feed into the bottom left corner for his first goal of the season. South Florida, however, couldn't find an equalizer before the final whistle.
Martin finished with four saves in net for the Bulls, who were outshot 11-4 on the night despite scoring on both of their shots on frame.

The oldest varsity athletic program at South Florida, men's soccer competed in the school's first-ever intercollegiate athletic contest on Sept. 25, 1965, beating Florida Southern 4-3.
The Bulls have claimed 14 conference championships and made 22 NCAA Tournament appearances, including three trips to the Elite Eight. The program boasts 31 MLS draft picks, including two-time MLS Golden Boot winner Jeff Cunningham, 1994 World Cup Team USA star Roy Wegerle, and 2013 MLS Cup winner Dom Dwyer. On Dec. 10, 2025, head coach George Kiefer was hired for his second tenure at South Florida. Kiefer previously led the Bulls from 2002-16, compiling one of the most successful stretches in program history as the Bulls went 162-86-51 (.627), earned four conference championships, and made 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. Under Kiefer, South Florida advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight in 2008 and 2011. His six NCAA Tournament victories remain the most in program history, and his win total ranks second all-time among South Florida head coaches.
