Avon Meacham joined the University of South Florida Softball staff in the spring of 2013 and brings over 16 years of coaching and 30 years of playing experience. He joined the staff as a volunteer assistant coach and works primarily with outfielders and hitting. 

In his first season at USF, Meacham helped guide the team to its best team batting average since 2004, as the Bulls finished the 2014 season with a .305 average and had nine players bat .305 or better.

Under Meacham and the rest of the staff, the Bulls also booked a trip to their third consecutive NCAA Tournament and registered 40-plus wins for the third straight year in 2014.

Since 2006, Avon served as the assistant coach for the USA Men’s National Softball Team, competing in international competitions around the world.  In 2007, he led the team to a silver medal at the International Softball Federation (ISF) World Championship in Prague, CZ.  In 2009, Meacham helped the USA team to a fourth place finish in the ISF World Championship in Saskatoon, Canada and compiled a 4-4 record in the 2013 ISF World Championship in Auckland, New Zealand.  Prior to coaching the USA team, Meacham was the assistant coach at Columbia Union College in Maryland from 1996-98, where he helped build a competitive Division III softball program for the first time in school history.    

As a player, in 1986 Meacham was selected International Softball Congress (ISC) First Team All-World and had a .526 batting average. He was a 1987, 1991 and 1995 Pan American Games Silver Medalist. His other accomplishments as a player include: 1988 ISC World Tournament Best Hitter (.636), 1990 ISF World Championship Best Hitter (.536), 1992 ISC World Tournament First Team All-World and ASA National Championship First Team All-American and 1993 ASA National Championship First Team All-American.  In 1994 and 1995 he won back-to-back ASA National Championships with the Decatur Pride, and was selected First Team All-American and Most Valuable Player.

Meacham has over 35 years of professional experience as a senior executive Budget Director in the Federal Government with the Departments of Agriculture, Transportation and Energy.  Avon led executives, managers, and employees in formulating, executing and reporting for multi-billion dollar budgets.

As a softball executive, Meacham demonstrated his leadership abilities while serving on the USA Amateur Softball Association (ASA) Board of Directors from 2001-05, the ASA Men’s National Team Selection Committee in 2005 and 2006 and the United States Olympic Committee’s Athletic Advisory Committee from 2002-04.

Meacham earned his Masters’ Degree in Business Management from Bowie State University and a Bachelor Degree in Business Administration from the University of Maryland Eastern Shore.  

In recognition for his accomplishments, Meacham was inducted into the USA Amateur Softball Association Hall of Fame in 2006, the Greater Washington, DC Softball Hall of Fame in 2002 and the University of Maryland Eastern Shore football Hall of Fame in 2001.

Avon and his wife Monica have two children, son AJ and daughter Whitney.
