Bulls Fall, 4-0, to Nationally Ranked Notre Dame

TAMPA, Fla. (October 2, 2005) The University of South Florida women's soccer team (5-4-2, 0-3-2 BIG EAST) fell to nationally ranked Notre Dame (10-2-0, 4-1-0 BIG EAST) by a score of 4-0 Sunday afternoon in BIG EAST Conference action at the USF Soccer Stadium.
The Bulls, who are still in search of the program's first-ever BIG EAST victory, were facing a nationally ranked squad for the second time in their last three league outings. The Fighting Irish (No. 5/6) and Connecticut (No. 18/24), which USF faced on Sept. 25, have both come out on top in its respective matchup with the Bulls.
UND led 2-0 at the half, thanks to a pair of scores from senior Katie Thorlakson. The senior forward finished two chances against the USF defense, including what proved to be the game winner at the 28:33 mark of the first half.
USF, outshot 31-6 for the match, did have two quality scoring chances that would have given the team an early lead. Senior Katie Reed weaved through the Fighting Irish back line and fired a shot from just inside the top of the box, but UND netminder Nikki Westfall was perfectly positioned to make the stop. Classmate Erica Lewis had a similar opportunity from close range following a corner kick, but again Westfall was in the right spot to make the save.
Junior goalkeeper Casey Garrett finished the afternoon with 11 saves, stopping several quality scoring chances for Notre Dame.
The Bulls continue their 2005 campaign at Pittsburgh on Friday, Oct. 7, the first of four-straight BIG EAST matches on the road.
