TAMPA, Fla. (October 21, 2005) ? The University of South Florida women's soccer team (7-6-3, 2-5-3 BIG EAST) kept its postseason hopes alive with a thrilling come-from-behind victory in double OT, against the St. John's Red Storm (6-9-3, 2-6-2 BIG EAST), 3-2, at the USF Soccer Stadium.
“This was a great character game for our girls,” said head coach T. Logan Fleck. “This year they faced all kids of adversity and challenges and responded with great fortitude. They gave everything they had in this game.”
The Bulls fell behind early behind when SJU sophomore Krystle Jalalian got on the board for the Red Storm with a touch shot past a diving Casey Garrett. Two minutes later, SJU midfielder Holly Rider gave the Red Storm a 2-0 lead with her shot from just inside the box.
USF would not back down, ohowever, outshooting St John's 30-13 in the contest.
One of those shots came off the foot of senior midfielder Jenny Mulvihill (7g, 14pts) who shot a rocket from 35 yards out into the bottom left of the net, at the 28th minute. She was assisted by fellow senior Katie Reed (3g, 5a, 11pts.).
Early in the second stanza, the Bulls knotted the match up at 2-2 when Erica Lewis (4g, 3a, 11pts) broke past a defender, putting the ball in the bottom right of the net from point blank range.
In the 81st minute of the game, SJU defenseman Andrea Coukoulis was red carded for a professional foul, forcing the Red Storm to play the rest of the match a man down.
The Bulls scoring opportunities continued when junior Michelle Buskey took a shot from right in front of the St. John's goal forcing its goalie to leave her feet, tipping the ball onto the top of the cross bar and back to a SJU defender.
With rain starting to fall in double overtime, Lewis found her classmate Reed on the doorstep of the SJU goal, propelling the ball past Rebecca Capinera, giving the Bulls the 3-2 victory.
I have great confidence in the seniors on this team,” said Fleck. “It's trademark for a group of seniors to come up with big plays. It was definitely a team effort.”
With this win, USF is still in the hunt for the BIG EAST Conference Tournament. The win puts USF into a tie with Syracuse for the fifth spot in the ?A' division, with the top five teams in each division making the tournament.
Due to the continuing threat of Hurricane Wilma, the scheduled match between USF and Syracuse on Sunday will now take place at Valley Fields on the Marquette campus in Milwaukee, Wis. on Sunday, Oct. 23. Game time is Noon EST.
