TAMPA, Fla. (September 18, 2005) -
Danielle Malkin's dramatic 90th-minute goal from a dead ball just outside the penalty area lifted the Bulls to a 1-0 victory over North Florida.
The victory gives
T. Logan Fleck's squad its fourth victory in its last five matches, and continued the Bulls' clean sheet at the USF Soccer Stadium this season.
“She bent the ball beautifully into the corner,” said head coach
T. Logan Fleck. “Danny (
Danielle Malkin) can do that, she's done an outstanding job for us this season. That was a great shot; she stood up and did what she had to do.”
The first half was a defensive struggle, with most of the play taking place between both boxes. USF (5-2-0, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) dominated possession, but was limited to just three shots on goal. North Florida (2-2-0) was unable to test Bulls keeper
Casey Garrett, who recorded her fourth shutout on the year, during the match.
The second half saw both offenses open up slightly, yet North Florida was unable to find the Bulls' frame on their limited opportunities within range. The Bulls back line was steadfast and clearly controlled the run of play in their own end. USF was able to find some chances, including a cross to
Ebony Robinson that sailed over the bar following a quality buildup. A strike by a streaking
Katie Reed from close range was stopped by UNF keeper Rachel Howard, an opportunity that seemed to be the best the Bulls had seen to that point.
The dramatic finish was set up by the senior Reed, who was taken down just outside the area with just 28 seconds remaining before overtime. Malkin was elected to take the shot, which UNF attempted to stymie with a three person wall. She rendered the defense ineffective with a brilliant strike over the shield, past the outstretched Howard and into the right upper 90 of the UNF goal.
“We hung in there and played well today,” said Fleck. “We controlled the game with 19 shots to three. We came in very emotionally charged up; we had a mission to come in and win this game after a very hard-fought match against Marquette.”
USF returns to BIG EAST conference play when they travel to Providence to take on the Friars on Friday Sept. 23, at 1 p.m. The Friars (3-4-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) are coming off a 1-0 loss to No. 18 Connecticut. This is the first ever meeting between the two teams.
