Bulls Struggle in BIG EAST Home Opener; Drop Match to Pitt, 3-1

TAMPA, Fla. (Sept. 30, 2005) ? After winning the first game, the USF volleyball team lost three straight to Pittsburgh, dropping its BIG EAST home opener, 3-1 (24-30, 30-21, 30-21, 30-16), Friday night at The Corral.
USF (1-10, 0-3 BIG EAST) couldn't get its offensive going after jumping out ahead, being out-hit .264.to .065 in the match.
Junior Johari Williams was an offensive threat for the Bulls, leading the team in kills (12) and notching her first double-digit-kill match of the year. Sophomore Kristina Fabris tallied 11 kills while chipping in defensively with eight block assists, setting a new career-high for the Ontario, Canada, native. Senior Kelsi Andrew-Wasylik had a solid outing for USF as well, breaking her career-high in aces with six in the match, while netting 11 digs.
A 10-0 run gave the Bulls the early lead in game one, as USF out-played the Panthers to get the win. The Bulls took advantage of Pitt's misplays, as the Panthers committed eight more errors that the Bulls. USF's offense was solid, out-hitting Pittsburgh (9-7, 2-1 BIG EAST) .133 to .057 in the game.
The Panthers turned it on and took advantage in the next three games on the way to the 3-1 victory, as the Bulls struggled offensively. Pittsburgh hit .321, .277 and .433 in the last three games compared to USF's -.094, .100 and .108 hitting percentage.
The Bulls will look to post their first BIG EAST win of the season when they welcome West Virginia to The Corral on Sunday at 2 p.m.
