October 25, 2006 | Men's Soccer
TAMPA, Fla. (October 25, 2006) ? The University of South Florida men's soccer team (9-5-4, 4-3-4 BIG EAST) scored five times to down the Seton Hall Pirates (9-8-1, 7-4-0 BIG EAST), 5-1, during the first round of the BIG EAST Championships at the USF Soccer Stadium on Wednesday, Oct. 25. Sparked by the return of some key offensive players, USF scored on its first three shots of the game and never looked back.
“It was good to see players like Hunter (West) and Rigo (Rodrigo Hidalgo) return,” said head coach George Kiefer. “I was pleased with the guys' performance tonight. We seem to be getting closer to what this team is capable of doing offensively and it is comforting seeing that tonight, especially heading into the quarterfinals. I thought we played extremely well and as we continue to have guys return, I look forward to keeping this momentum going.”
Two goals by Hermann Trophy candidate Rodrigo Hidalgo highlighted USF strong offensive outing as both scores were recorded in the first half. Goals by Hunter West, Kris Raad and Anthony D'Oyley, Jr., rounded out the night for USF, scoring a season-high in the contest and improving the team's conference tournament record to 2-1-1 all-time.
Goalkeeper Dane Brenner registered seven saves en route to his ninth win of the season. The High Point, N.C., native picked up his second-career victory over the Pirates and improved his BIG EAST Championship record to 2-1-0.
Hidalgo got the Bulls on the board in the second minute, converting a penalty kick opportunity. The PK was awarded after West was taken down in the box during an early USF attack. The goal was the fifth of the season for Hidalgo and his first penalty kick goal of the season.
USF extended its lead in the 19th minute when West found the back of the net for his fourth goal of the season. The goal was set up when defender Joey Brown slipped a pass to Jordan Seabrook on the right side of Seton Hall's area. Seabrook turned and created space to find West streaking down the middle of the 18-yard box. With just the keeper to beat, West scored what would eventually be the game-winner. Both Seabrook and Brown were credited with assists on the play.
The Bulls made the score 3-0 with Hidalgo's second goal of the night in the 30th minute. With the ball down in the right corner of the Pirate's third on the field, the West Palm Beach, Fla., native beat two defenders along the end line and chipped a shot off of goalkeeper Ian Joyce with the outside of right foot. The shot found its way over the goal line, giving USF a three-goal lead.
USF entered halftime trailing in shots, 9-4, however led Seton Hall, 3-0.
Seton Hall cut USF's lead to two goals in the 62nd minute. Teddy Niziolek scored his fifth goal of the season with a shot from just inside USF's area. Niziolek received a pass from Jason Raus at the edge of the 18-yard box and struck a shot out of goalkeeper Dane Brenner's reach. Raus notched his seventh assist of the season on the score.
USF responded to Seton Hall's score with the team's fourth goal of the night in the 65th minute. Raad struck a shot from the right corner of the area, beating Joyce to the near post for his first score of the season. Senior Sammy Castellanos, who sent a square pass to Raad, was credited with his fifth assist of 2006.
The Bulls rounded out their scoring with D'Oyley's score in the 87th minute. Joyce, who attempted to clear a long pass towards the right corner sent the ball to USF's Ogi Perucica, who took a shot toward the open net from 35 yards out. The ball, which was heading wide of the net was chased by both D'Oyley and Joyce. D'Oyley got to the ball first, one-timing a shot into the back of the net. The score was the first of the season for D'Oyley. Perucica was credited with his first assist of 2006 on the goal.
The win was the 50th of Kiefer's career in his 92nd-career match at USF.
With the victory, USF will now travel to Morgantown, W.Va., to face the Blue Division Champion West Virginia Mountaineers on Saturday, Oct. 28. Game time is 7 p.m.
