TAMPA, Fla. (Feb. 24, 2006) ? After scoring seven runs in the first game of the day, the USF softball team couldn't bring a run home in a 1-0 loss to Indiana University in the second game of the Louisville Slugger Invitational held at the USF Softball Field on Friday.
The Bulls (8-5) couldn't get that much offense going against Hoosiers starting pitcher Mariangee Bogado (1-0). The senior retired 23 USF batters on strikeouts alone and only gave up four hits and one walk in her 10-inning complete game shutout.
Both of USF's pitchers had solid outings as well, as neither starter Bree Spence or Cristi Ecks allowed an earned run. Spence went six and one-third innings only dishing out three hits while striking out five batters. Ecks (3-3) came in the game in the seventh inning and only gave up two hits in three and two-thirds innings of work.
USF did have some scoring chances though, however it couldn't capitalize as the Bulls stranded eight runners on base.
It wasn't until international tiebreaker rules were put in effect in the 10th inning that the winning run was put on the board, as Indiana (1-1-1) broke the stalemate to take a 1-0 lead. Putting a runner at second base to start off the inning, a wild pitch and a RBI single scored the Hoosiers' lone run of the game.
With its only opportunity to tie the game in the bottom of the 10th, Bogado struck out the side to end the game.
The Bulls will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday when they Kent State at 1 p.m. USF will either play at 4 p.m. or 6:30 p.m. depending on its seeding for the semifinals.
