TAMPA, Fla. (April 12, 2006) ? The University of South Florida softball team ended its nine-game winning streak Wednesday night, losing 3-1 to the University of Central Florida at the USF Softball Field.
USF (36-19) couldn't get its offense going in the game, as UCF starting pitcher Allison Kime (10-13) threw a two-hitter in her complete-game win. Kime struck out 11 USF batters, allowed one run and walked two in the game.
The Golden Knights (14-19) opened up the scoring in the top of the third, loading up the bases and scoring three runs. With no outs on the board, UCF capitalized on the bases-loaded situation, scoring its first run of the inning on a wild pitch. Breanne Javier put two more runs on the board to give UCF a 3-0 lead thanks to a two-RBI single.
Cristi Ecks (15-10) started the game for USF, but was relieved in the third inning after allowing the UCF to take a three-run lead. In two and one-third innings of work, the freshman gave up three earned runs, six hits and a walk, while striking out two batters.
Bree Spence came in the game and got out of the third inning for the Bulls without giving up any more runs. She pitched the rest of the game, holding the Golden Knights scoreless in four and two-thirds innings while scattering three hits.
In the fourth inning, the Bulls were finally able to get their offense going. Krista Holle recorded an infield single and Laura Wolf ended the shutout hitting a two-out RBI double, making the score 3-1.
Although UCF's pitcher had a solid outing in the circle, the Bulls did have some chances to score in the game but couldn't take advantage, as they stranded seven runners.
The Bulls will resume BIG EAST action when they travel to Louisville, Ky. to play a doubleheader against the Cardinals on Saturday at noon.
