USF Baseball Powers Past Georgetown, 14-3; Win First Game of the Series

TAMPA, Fla. (April 28, 2006) ? Fifteen hits, including a pair of home runs by senior Matt McHargue guided the University of South Florida baseball team (20-23, 9-10 BIG EAST) to a 14-3 win over the Georgetown Hoyas (19-25, 5-11 BIG EAST) on Friday, April 28 at Red McEwen Field.

Six of the Bulls' 15 hits went for extra bases, including four long balls. McHargue, who finished the night 2-for-4, drove in four runs while crossing the plate twice. Junior Ty Taborelli went a perfect 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs scored. The Bulls center fielder was a triple shy of hitting for the cycle. Senior Brian Baisley crushed his fourth home run of the season, driving in three runs and scoring two in a 2-for-4 outing. Senior Kris Howell extended his career-best hitting streak to 13 games with a 1-for-3 performance versus the Hoyas.

Right-hander Casey Hudspeth picked up his fifth win of the season, striking out eight Hoya batters in seven innings of action. Matt Ingram closed out the contest, pitching two shutout innings of relief.

The Bulls jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first as a result of a three-run blast by Baisley over the fence in right field.  Georgetown scored its first run of the game on a RBI double by Ryan Craft in the top of the third. USF answered with a solo shot by Taborelli in the bottom half of the third. The home run was the second of the season for the Tampa native.

Georgetown cut USF's lead to 4-3, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth, however a pair of runs by the Bulls in the bottom of the fourth increased the score 6-3 in favor of USF. The Bulls open the game up with a seven-run fifth inning. USF registered eight hits during the inning, including a three-run homer by McHargue. The seven runs put the game out of reach 13-3. USF added a run in the bottom of the sixth with McHargue's second home run of the night, this time a solo shot over the fence in right-center field.

The win snapped a two-game skid for USF and marked the first-ever victory for USF over Georgetown (1-0)

USF will continue its three-game series with Georgetown on Saturday, April 29. On the mound for the Bulls will be Daniel Thomas. Stephen Burns will get the start for the Hoyas. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.
