USF Shuts Out No.8 Notre Dame in BIG EAST Opener, 2-0
September 08, 2006 | Men's Soccer
NOTRE DAME, Ind. (September 8, 2006) ? Outstanding play in the net by senior Dane Brenner coupled with goals by sophomore Jordan Seabrook and junior Simon Schoendorf led the University of South Florida men's soccer team (3-2-0, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) to a 2-0 win over the No. 8-ranked Notre Dame Fighting Irish (2-2-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) on Friday, Sept. 8 at Alumni Field.
In the team's first BIG EAST contest of the 2006 season and first meeting with the Fighting Irish since 1985, USF scored two late goals to move to 1-0-0 in conference play. The contest also marked USF's first-ever visit to Alumni Field.
Brenner's six saves led to his third shutout victory of the season. The High Point, N.C., native not only prevented the ball from finding the back of the net, but continuously defused the Irish attack by cutting off crosses and stopping the play before it could build. The win was the 30th of his career and resulted in his 15th-career clean sheet.
Following a first half, which saw both teams looking to create chances, the Bulls broke the scoreless tie, with Seabrook's second goal of the season in the 86th minute. Receiving a long pass from Schoendorf, Seabrook split the Irish defense and buried a shot past goalkeeper Andrew Quinn to give the Bulls a 1-0 lead. The goal was the first game-winner of the season by the Indianapolis, Ind., striker. Schoendorf was credited with his first assist of the season on the score. The Karlsruhe, Germany, native wasn't done, notching his first goal of the season three minutes later with a strike in the 89th minute. Streaking down the left side of the field, Schoendorf placed a shot far post to give USF a 2-0 advantage.
Schoendorf nearly netted a goal earlier in the half, taking a shot on net in the 75th minute. However, Quinn made an acrobatic save to keep the game tied at 0-0.
Despite being out-shot 17-9, USF trailed by just one shot on net in the contest (6-5).
The first half saw both teams trying to create chances. USF registered four shots (two on frame) in the first 45 minutes, while the Irish tallied 10 (only 3 on net).
The win improves USF to 10-2-0 all-time in BIG EAST action, resulting the head coach George Kiefer's first-ever victory over Notre Dame.
The Bulls will wrap up its current four-game road trip with visit to Milwaukee, Wis., and familiar foe Marquette on Sunday, Sept. 10. The contest will be the first-ever BIG EAST matchup between the two teams, which have met a total of 12 times (USF leads the series history 7-5-0). Game time is 2 p.m.
