MILWAUKEE, Wis. (September 10, 2006) ? A pair of goals in the span of nearly two minutes lifted the University of South Florida men's soccer team (4-2-0, 2-0-0 BIG EAST) to a 2-1 win over the Marquette Golden Eagles (1-4-1, 0-2-0 BIG EAST) on Sunday, Sept. 10 at Valley Fields.
Goals by sophomore Jordan Seabrook and junior Rodrigo Hidalgo guided the Bulls to their second-straight BIG EAST victory and fourth win away from the USF Soccer Stadium this season.
Marquette's Matt Blouin broke a scoreless tie with a goal in the 60th minute. On a quick counter (following a turnover at midfield), Blouin sent a pass to Rob Walton, who in turn, sent the pass back to Blouin streaking towards USF's goal. The goal was the first of the season for the Marquette forward. Walton was credited with an assist on the goal.
Trailing 1-0 late in the contest, USF knotted the match in the 73rd minute on Seabrook's third goal of the season. The Indianapolis, Ind., native took possession of the ball in the USF half and ran past the MU defense. After finding himself deep in the Marquette end, Seabrook launched a 17-yard shot that looped just under the crossbar and into the net. MU keeper Marc Dettmann had little chance to stop the perfect attack.
Two minutes and five seconds later, Hidalgo claimed the lead for the Bulls on another well-placed goal. Kevon Neaves took a shot that was blocked. Neaves quickly collected the loose ball and centered it to Hidalgo, who struck a sharp one-timer to the upper right corner. The goal was the first of the season for Hidalgo. Neaves was credited with his second assists of the year.
Goalkeeper Dane Brenner, who recorded one save on the afternoon, registered his second-straight victory and first-career versus Marquette. The Bulls' defense held the Golden Eagles' offense in check for most of the match, holding them to just two shots on net. For the game, USF out-shot Marquette 15-4.
USF will head home to take on No. 10 West Virginia on Friday, Sept. 15 at the USF Soccer Stadium. The match will be the first home contest for the Bulls in over two weeks. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
