Jones Pours In 30, Bulls Down UCF

TAMPA, Fla. - University of South Florida freshman Dominique Jones tallied a career-high 30 points as USF beat Central Florida, 75-67, Saturday night at the Sun Dome.

The Bulls have won five straight games since starting the season 0-3. USF last won five consecutive games to start off the 2001-2002 season, when they won seven in a row.

The Knights (4-3) had just three points in the last four minutes of the game. With the Bulls leading 65-61, UCF guard Dave Noel converted a conventional 3-point play to slice USF's lead to 65-64 with 4:09 to play.

But the Bulls ended the game on a 10-3 run, with UCF's only points coming on a Mike O'Donnell 3-pointer with 1:45 remaining. Jesus Verdejo scored four points in the final USF run, Solomon Bozeman three and Jones three. The Bulls committed just three turnovers in the second half after having 11 at halftime.

The 30 points scored by Jones was just three shy of the USF record for points scored by a freshman. Radenko Dobras tallied 33 points on Feb. 11, 1989. Jones was 10-13 from the field and 4-6 from 3-point range. He also had five assists, four rebounds and four steals.

USF got a double-double from Kentrell Gransberry, who had 11 points and a game-high 15 rebounds. It was his fourth double-double of the season.

Verdejo added 10 points and freshman Orin Chin had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Up 38-37 at the half, USF trailed most of the second half and shot 38 percent on field goals. The Knights were helped by 16 points off the bench and 14 off turnovers. But the Bulls got 17 points off turnovers and crucial points from Bozeman, who had eight points coming off the bench.

UCF's Jermaine Taylor had 20 points, and O'Donnell, Stanley Billings and Tony Davis each had 10. Davis also had 10 rebounds.
