TAMPA, Fla. (March 11, 2007) ? The University of South Florida men's tennis team saw its three-match win streak end Sunday afternoon against the Harvard Crimson, 5-2 at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
The Bulls (6-7), winners of five of their last six matches, continued to play well in doubles, as they captured the point for the sixth time in the last seven tries.
Ales Svigelj and partner Marc Jaeger got the start at the No. 2 position and defeated Harvard's Dan Nguyen and Kieran Burke, 8-1.
For the first time this season, Thomas Estrada joined with Mark Gattiker at No. 3, due to an injury to Estrada's normal partner, Mahmoud Hamed. The pair set down Scott Denenberg and Michael Hayes, 8-5.
The tide turned against the Bulls in singles play however, as only Marc Jaeger emerged victorious. The junior won his fourth match in a row with a 7-5, 5-7, 1-0(4) upending of Denenberg at No. 2.
Because of Hamed's injury, the bottom half of the lineup was shuffled to include Gattiker at No. 6, and Estrada and Daniel Daudt shifting up one place from their normal spots.
Estrada was set down 6-2, 7-5 on the fourth court to end his seven match win-streak.
Gattiker, Daudt and Svigelj fought their hardest, taking their opponents to three sets each, but none could prevail as Harvard captured its second win of the year.
The Bulls will look to begin a new win streak on Friday, Mar. 16 with they host No. 54 Penn St. at the Varsity Tennis Courts. First serve is set for Noon. Admission is free.
